Wictor Was Always So Serious—Joking with Him Was Unsettling, and His Perplexed Glance Made Me Feel F…

William was always such a serious man; attempting a joke in his presence was rather unnerving. The moment Id try to jest, his perplexed gaze felt as though hed silently concluded I was foolish. He was my very first boyfriend, and at the time, it never occurred to me that feeling uneasy in someone’s company was a sign that they weren’t right for you. William and I were ill-suited from the beginning, yet I clung to him because he excelled in his studiestop of the classand gave me the motivation to push myself academically. Truth be told, I found our time together rather monotonous, and it was clear he wasnt terribly interested in me either. In fact, it got to the point where he turned his attentions to my closest friend, and while I naively thought our relationship was slowly blossoming, his courtship with her was advancing at a remarkable pace.

I discovered their budding romance through whispers from my classmates, and the confrontation William and I had in front of everyone became quite the spectacle. Looking back, I was convinced that his betrayal, him being my first and only sweetheart at the time, meant there was something fundamentally wrong with methat it must all be my fault. After we parted ways, I became even more diligent, pouring myself into my studies and taking extra care with my appearance, growing more guarded around young men.

That was my way, back then, of coming to terms with my first failed relationshipa means of setting aside the painyet, in hindsight, it made me much more cautious. I graduated with honours, secured an excellent position, and that’s where I met a gentleman some years my senior.

I have not, for even a moment, regretted not spending my university days dating one boy after another; instead, I devoted those years to my education. The truly meaningful relationship I later experienced, with a man in whose company I felt perfectly at ease, brought far greater richness to my life than anything with William. That trying episode with him taught me an invaluable lessonthat people neednt all be deceitful or unfaithful, and that such disappointment can often be avoided by being attentive to both your own feelings and those of your partner. For when you truly care for each other, when your thoughts and hopes are well-aligned, the notion of parting ways simply never arises.
