My mum and dad always had a complicated relationship, you know? Mum adored him; she truly did love him with all her heart. But Dad was a bizarre one. He was always falling in and out of love, getting swept away with someone new and then, when things got a bit dull, popping back home again. Every single time, Mum would forgive him and welcome him back as though nothing had happened. But you could see those moments tore her up inside. Unlike her, I never had quite such a soft heart. That kind of love just got on my nerves, honestly. When I was old enough, Id just roll my eyes at Dads returns. Id always have a remark ready, sending him right back to wherever hed been. But then Mum would step in, coax me to let it go, and tell me, Hes made a mistake. He deserves another chance.
Id argue back, saying shed given him a thousand chances already and he never seemed to learn a thing. Still, all shed say was, Youll understand when youre older. Dad, after one of his adventures, would come back all sheepish and quiet, acting like a scolded dog. Slowly, though, hed get back to himself just in time to go chasing someone new again. Frankly, I grew to really despise him.
Then, last year, Mum passed away and that was itI was left on my own. I was twenty-six by then, and there was no way I had any intention of living with a man whod lost the plotespecially because not even two weeks after Mums funeral, he brought home a new girlfriend. And this time, he actually invited her into our house.
After Mum died, I inherited two-thirds of the houseshed left her share to me. Dad still owned a third. As much as I hated it, I couldnt legally kick his latest fling out of the home. I spoke with solicitors and followed their advice. I first offered to buy Dads share off him, but of course he refused. Then I asked if he fancied buying my two-thirds, but I got the expected answer no again. So as a last resort, and again on my solicitors advice, I told him I could just sell my share to anyone willing to take it. Oh, you should have heard the fuss! He absolutely lost itranting and carrying on. It was music to my ears, honestly. Let him shout himself hoarse. Ill go ahead, sell my part, and get as far away as I possibly can. I havent any desire to lay eyes on him again.
