The Night Elena Stayed Awake

Elena had been taking the pills her husband Marcus placed beside her bed every night.

He said they were for stress. He said she needed rest. But every morning she woke up weaker, with strange gaps in her memory and the feeling that someone had been inside their bedroom while she slept.

On the fourth night, Elena only pretended to swallow the pill.

She waited until Marcus turned off the lamp, then hid it under her pillow and closed her eyes.

Minutes later, the closet door opened.

Elena stayed perfectly still as Marcus stepped toward the hidden safe. Behind him came a woman in a black dress, carrying Elena’s laptop.

“You promised she wouldn’t wake up,” the woman whispered.

“She won’t,” Marcus said coldly.

He pulled documents from the safe—bank papers, property transfers, and a forged medical form with Elena’s signature at the bottom.

Elena’s heart pounded, but she didn’t move. Under the blanket, her fingers found her phone. She pressed record.

Then Marcus said the words that changed everything:

“After tomorrow, she won’t be a problem anymore.”

The next morning, Marcus entered the bedroom with a soft smile and another pill.

But this time Elena was sitting up.

Behind her stood two police officers and her lawyer.

Marcus froze.

The woman from the closet had already been arrested at the airport. The forged documents were in evidence. The bank transfers had been stopped.

Elena looked at the man she once trusted and placed the untouched pill on the table.

“You were right,” she said quietly. “After today, I won’t be your problem anymore.”

Marcus was taken away in handcuffs.

And Elena walked out of that house with her name, her fortune, and her life finally back in her own hands.
