Emma thought the broken car was the worst part of the evening.
She and Daniel were driving through a quiet mountain road when the engine suddenly died. Daniel pulled over, opened the hood, and told her it was “nothing serious.”
But Emma noticed his hands were shaking.
While he worked on the engine, she found a folded receipt under the driver’s seat. It was from a repair shop. The date was yesterday.
Brake inspection. Paid in cash.
Emma’s stomach tightened.
“Why did you check my brakes yesterday?” she asked.
Daniel froze.
For a moment, the only sound was the wind passing over the empty road.
Then a car stopped behind them. A woman stepped out — Daniel’s ex-wife.
She looked at Emma and said, “He did the same thing to me.”
Daniel tried to run, but the woman had already called the police.
Later that night, Emma learned the truth: Daniel had been stealing money from both women and wanted to scare Emma into signing over her savings.
He never got the chance.
The receipt saved her life.
