Everyone expected Richard to make a romantic speech at Evelyn’s 65th birthday celebration. The mansion glittered with white roses, champagne flowed, and dozens of guests gathered around the couple.
Instead, Richard entered carrying a black folder and placed it in front of his wife.
“Sign these.”
Claire opened it and froze. They were divorce papers.
Richard announced that he wanted witnesses, certain that humiliating her publicly would give him control. But after reading the first page, Claire calmly reached into her handbag.
“You’re right,” she said. “We do need witnesses.”
She placed a bank record on the table. It showed millions transferred from her late father’s family trust into a secret company Richard had created.
His confidence vanished.
Before he could take the document, the mansion doors opened and two financial investigators entered. Claire explained that her lawyer had already given them copies of every transaction.
Then she revealed the final detail: the secret company was registered in Evelyn’s name.
Her mother dropped her glass in shock. Richard had persuaded Evelyn to sign documents he claimed were harmless investments. In reality, he had used her identity to hide the stolen money and planned to leave Claire before the fraud was discovered.
Richard was arrested that night. Evelyn cooperated with investigators, and most of the stolen money was eventually recovered.
Several weeks later, Claire signed the divorce papers in her lawyer’s office. Richard had intended them to be his escape.
Instead, they became proof that Claire was finally free.
